This portrait is about a moment we often feel, but rarely know how to name—
that space before the words arrive.
When something is already alive inside: a feeling, a memory, a confession—
but it hasn’t yet become language.
It lives in a glance, in the way fingers hover near the mouth,
in the breath that holds everything and nothing at once.
I love painting freckles—not just as a detail, but as a kind of map.
This girl carries summer across her skin, winters in her stillness,
and moments that both ache and comfort at the same time.
Her eyes aren’t just hazel. They hold cracks, dreams, losses, and light.
I wanted to capture that exact state where she almost says something,
but doesn’t.
Not out of fear, but because some truths are bigger than words.
While painting her, I found myself sinking into my own memories,
into those silences we carry like songs we never finished.
The pauses we more vividly than speeches.
"Before the Words" isn’t just a portrait. It’s a state of being.
Between an inhale and the first word.
Between "I " and "I imagine."
