Ayotunde Ayomide – Contemporary Mixed Media Artist Inspired by African Culture

Rooted in the vibrant traditions of Oyo State, Nigeria, I am a contemporary mixed media artist who weaves stories of heritage, resilience, and identity into every canvas. My work is a bold exploration oof charcoal and acrylic techniques, basket weaving motifs, and reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Africa.

Art, for me, is more than visual expression; it's a dialogue between the past and the present. Drawing inspiration from daily life, traditional patterns, and the dynamic energy of modern Nigeria, I create pieces that are both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. Each brushstroke, texture, and color palette is a tribute to the strength and beauty embedded in African history.

Through my work, I aim to connect with collectors and art lovers worldwide, inviting them to experience the stories, emotions, and cultural symbols that define my journey.

Discover the soul of contemporary African artwhere tradition meets bold, modern expression.

Artist Statement

As a contemporary mixed media artist from Oyo State, Nigeria, my work is a visual testament to hope, faith, and resilience. Rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Africa, I blend bold acrylic techniques and basket weaving motifs to create layered, textured pieces that tell stories of identity and transformation.

My art is a bridge between tradition and modernity, drawing inspiration from daily life and cultural patterns. But beyond aesthetics, my work is a message a reminder that even in the face of challenges, there is strength, beauty, and the promise of renewal. Each brushstroke, woven detail, and vibrant color symbolizes the enduring power of hope and the belief that growth is always possible.

The Symbolism of Basket Weaving in My Art

In my work, the basket weaving motif is more than a decorative element; it is a powerful symbol of purpose, resilience, and the quiet beauty of timing. Inspired by the timeless story of the Pot and the Basket, this motif reflects a universal truth: everyone has their own season to shine.

In the story, the Pot boasts of its ability to carry water, while the Basket, with its woven gaps, is dismissed as useless. Yet, when the season shifts and the rains cease, it is the Basket that becomes essentialcarrying the village’s harvest with grace and strength. This narrative mirrors the rhythms of life, where talents and purposes may not always be immediately visible or celebrated, but that does not diminish their value. Purpose is not defined by constant recognition but by the right moment to flourish.

Through the intricate patterns of basket weaving, I explore themes of hope, faith, and motivation. The open spaces within the weave—what some might view as flaws—are integral to its function, much like the gaps and uncertainties in our own lives that often shape us in unseen ways.
